A 17th Century Comedic Opera
Our largest project to date was a fully-staged production of a one-act Dramma Burlesco: Lo Spedale. Rediscovered by Dr Naomi Matsumoto and first performed by Solomon's Knot in 2015, this was its second-ever staging in modern times, and the first in a faithful 17th century production, as part of the annual Illuminate Rotherhithe Festival on November 24th.

Musica Antica Rotherhithe was founded in 2016 by local musicians Oliver Doyle and Jessica Eucker, with the aim of bringing regular performances of Early Music to SE16.
While specialising in the performance of 17th Century chamber music, their repertoire extends into opera, and to the works of composers writing in the High-Late Middle Ages, often overlooked in programmes today.
Over the past two years we have promoted the performance of 17th century opera on a scale not normally seen outside of established theatres. Past performances include Monteverdi's Ballo dell'Ingrate, Rossi's cantata Disperar di se Stesso, extracts from Cavalli's Ercole Amante and Lully's Le Bourgois Gentilhomme, a semi-staged programme of Purcell's songs and Caldara's rarely-heard oratorio Maddalena ai Piedi di Cristo.
